Overview
Aging doesn't affect the body as one uniform process — it shows up differently across major systems. Neuroscience studies how the brain and nervous system change with age; immunology studies how immune function shifts, often weakening in some ways while overreacting in others (sometimes called "inflammaging"); endocrinology studies how hormonal signaling changes over time.
These systems also talk to each other constantly — immune signaling affects the brain, hormones affect immune function — so most researchers in this space study them as an interconnected network rather than in isolation.
Why it matters
Many of the conditions people associate with "getting old" — cognitive decline, weaker immune response, hormonal shifts — trace back to changes in these specific systems, which makes them direct targets for intervention.
